Objective: Safety Education—Landon will learn about dangers and prevention of fires and safety during swimming and other physical activities.
From the time Landon was old enough to use a water hose, he has always been taught about fire safety in reference to summer campfires. This year, however, Landon spent every Friday morning at the Audubon Nature Center where he learned additional survival skills (specifically fire safety) from a trained professional. Landon had the opportunity to actually create his own fire using petroleum jelly on a cotton ball and a match. He was then able to compare that method to other fire starting methods (using a lighter or flint, for example). Landon was taught about the importance of clearing the area first and creating a functional and safe workspace to build a fire and to always have water nearby. He was able to properly and effectively light his own fire and safely put it out.
Landon felt very accomplished when the naturalist complimented him that, “Most adults would have a hard time making a fire like that.”
He is also signed up for the Survival Camp summer series to build upon these skills.
