3rd Grade Pennsylvania

Objective: Social Studies: History of U.S., PA, and the world; Civics—Landon will continue to learn more about the history of the United States, Pennsylvania, and the history of the world.

So much of our learning experiences this year wove Pennsylvania seamlessly through our studies. Learning about our local environment and how it impacts us today and how it impacted the Iroquois long ago is always a hot topic of conversation. Learning how to use one’s resources at hand never goes out of style.

Landon spent every Friday at our local nature center immersed in opportunities that can’t be learned from a book, or a Zoom call, or a movie. He was given the chance to explore and go on adventures with one of their naturalist experts and a small group of other children his age. Topics he learned spanned from pond ecosystems and raptors to conservation efforts and survival skills (including fire safety).

Our in-depth study of Pennsylvania this year focused on the history of Thomas Kane and the Kinzua Bridge (Kinzua State Park).

After learning more about this part of PA history, Landon wrote the following poem:

The following shows a document of questions and answers (similar to a KWL experience). Landon wrote down questions he wanted to learn about the structure, then while we were at the Kinzua State Park museum and through other literature, we found the answers (or not) to his questions:

Here is the study guide and literature we used – and completed – to help support our study:
